A Cooling Heart
"Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.” Philippians 2:1-2 (NLT)
What is your purpose? Why are you here? If you are a Jesus follower, there is only one answer - Loving Jesus through obedience and Loving others through selflessness in sharing the gospel and service (Love God, Love Others). Just think, If we majored on these two things, how much foolishness, heartache, and regret would be avoided. Think about the stories of life, encouragement and miracles we would be able to tell. Think about the fulfillment and wholeness we would experience. But don't forget the trouble, persecution, and pain that will also be sprinkled throughout and sometimes heavily. Trouble in this Christian life cannot be evaded, but it can be redeemed - see John 16:33 & Romans 8:28.
The Apostle Paul is writing these words from a Roman Prison, and yet he writes with such passion, joy, and purpose. He was able to have joy and still care enough about others because he was “one-minded” - gospel-minded. He knew that nothing else mattered if an individual gained the whole world but lost their soul (Matthew 16:26).
In light of this Gospel Truth, Paul allowed himself to be ridiculed, beaten, and imprisoned so others could come to a saving relationship with Jesus.
What are you willing to sacrifice and suffer so others will know Jesus?
Paul’s heart for the lost was not his own. It was given to him the day he became a Born Again Follower of Christ. He was transformed, made new, and given a new heart with new desires and a capacity to understand biblical truths.
If you have asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins, then you are no different than Paul. And because of this truth, you too have received a changed heart that desires to love God and love others.
If your heart has grown cold concerning the lost, and you have lost sight of this “one-minded” purpose, then ask Jesus to forgive you and pray the following…
Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me for losing sight of what matters most. Renew my heart to love you and love others. Allow your passion for the lost to ignite a fire in me that will enable me to demonstrate and speak of your love and forgiveness to those who don’t know you. Amen!
