What Do You Consider Garbage?
"What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ..." Philippians 3:8 (NLT)
What do you desire most? What is the one thing you think will make you happy? You know, the thing you have asked God for and said, "If You give me this one thing, I will never ask again."
The truth is, God doesn't want you to stop asking Him for things. He loves when You come to Him and ask because you are having a conversation with Him. You are acknowledging His presence, even if it is for the wrong reason at times. He loves to interact with His children.
Like any good Father, He doesn't always give us what we think we need, but what we most need. And what we most need isn't answers to our questions (even though God is not opposed to you asking), or more things, or a better reputation, or to make the team, but simply to know Him.
That is what Paul meant when he wrote, "I consider them (the things and accomplishments of his life) garbage, that I may gain (know) Christ..." [Emphasis mine].
When we are in a genuine relationship with Jesus, like we would be with any other person, Everything else falls into place. We begin to see things and achievements for what they are - temporal and not eternal. We don't allow those things to define us and give us value.
Knowing Jesus and being known by Him is where we receive true worth and identity. Everything else truly becomes garbage. Desire Jesus and lose everything else for His sake.
Lord Jesus, thank you that you always offer and give me what I genuinely need - You. Forgive me when I seek things to find worth and fulfillment. Holy Spirit, continue to point me to Jesus and seeking after Him in everything I do. Amen.
