"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Matthew 6:13 (NIV)
There are temptations around us every day. From the moment we wake up in the morning until we go to bed at night we have many opportunities to give in or overcome temptation. Think about it, what have you been tempted with today? Tempted to hit the snooze button, or skip breakfast. How about, tempted to run the yellow light just before it turns red, or tempted to talk about someone because everyone else is. Maybe you are tempted to lie about why your homework isn’t done because the night before you gave into temptation and watched The Walking Dead rather than do your homework.
The list goes on and on as our day goes on and on. Temptations are always going to be around us; sadly it is part of the world we live in and our human nature. But God because of his great love for us has told us to ask him to help us. This bible verse today is one line from a model prayer in the bible. When the disciples asked Jesus how they should pray, Jesus gave them some instructions. One of the instructions is to ask God to lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
God knows we are going to be tempted, he understands us and he loves and cares for us. He wants us to come to him when we are tempted to not do the right thing so he can give us the power we need to do what is right. The next time temptation comes your way, pause and ask God to lead you not into temptation, and then watch how you will be guided to do what is best. Then choose what is right.
Lord Jesus, as you taught us to pray, I pray... Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon.May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Amen
