Break Your Bottle

May 14, 2018

"A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance." John 12:2-3 (NLT)

It was customary in Jesus' day for hosts to anoint their honored guests with a small dab of a fine fragrance. Mary shattered this tradition, by breaking the vessel that contained the fragrance and pouring it all over Jesus' feet. In both gospels this event is recorded, the disciples were not happy at such a waste.

Passion will always lead to criticism from others, because passion doesn't take into account what is practical. It is always an excess. In fact, we were all created to be passionate. Because of this truth, we are all passionate about something. We all go to extremes over the things we are passionate about.

We are passionate about teams and spend a great deal of money to root for them.

We are passionate about certain people and will make all sorts of exceptions, and even lie,  just to spend time with them.

We are passionate about our activities, and spend money on specialized coaches, and equipment so we can be our best.

We are passionate about our grades and make all sorts of sacrifices so we can graduate with honors.

By themselves, the things I mentioned above are not evil or wrong, but our disordered love toward them is the problem.

We have forgotten that Jesus is supposed to be our First Love and is the only love that truly satisfies (Revelation 2:4). We all break our expensive vessels (extravagant passion) for something or someone, but the only One deserving of our passion is Jesus. Today ask Jesus to reorder your disordered love and live passionately for and with Him.

Prayer

Jesus, forgive me for allowing other passions to replace my passion and devotion to You. Show me what I have been breaking my vessel over and give me the grace to reorder my heart and mind so that I can live passionately for You and Your mission, which is to seek and save those who are lost. Amen
