We Need a Filter
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
If you are anything like me, coffee plays a crucial part in your life. Being that I used to work at a coffee shop and have had a cup or two or three, or five each day for the past five years or so you become somewhat of an aficionado.
There are few things more important to the coffee brewing process besides the actual coffee itself. I would say the second most important thing is the piece of paper that you pour your freshly ground coffee onto and hot water through; commonly referred to as a filter. The simplest way to describe the extremely straight forward yet hugely important job of this filter is to say that it lets the good stuff through and keeps the bad stuff out. The good stuff is good to drink. It benefits the consumer by providing energy and also pairs wonderfully with a great bacon, egg, and toast with a little avocado spread breakfast. The bad stuff that is left isn’t really useful unless you know someone trying to fertilize a garden. You normally just discard the used up coffee grounds and thats that.
You may be wondering to yourself, man why is Lucas diving head first into such great detail about how to filter the best drink on earth. Great question. The reason I say all that is to say this; the Bible, which is God’s word breathed over many individuals throughout history, written down and then eventually compiled into what we have now, is our filter for life. It helps us see things as they ought to be seen and it helps us get the most enjoyment and satisfaction (wholeness - knowing we are complete in Jesus regardless of circumstances or present feelings) out of the life we are experiencing.
Life is tough and is confusing. We absolutely do not need any help being bombarded with tens to hundreds of competing ideas and worldview’s each day. This is why it is so important to be with Jesus. He is our lighthouse that guides us home every single time. He will never let you down and he will never lead you to a place he hasn’t already prepared a way through. Abide in Him this summer. Allow him to filter everything that comes in and goes out of your life.
Prayer Lord, thank you for being so in love with me. Thank you for including me in all that you do, even when I am oblivious to what is going on behind the scenes. Holy Spirit help me each day to take a closer look into who God is and what kind of life I am to live. I love you. Thank you for hearing me. Amen.
