Who You With?
1 Corinthians 5:9-12 (NLT) - When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.
These are powerful words from Paul, and these are words that we like to soften or bend. These are words of justice and little grace, but truth can appear as though there is no grace present at times in the scriptures. Christ is our measuring stick of both truth and grace. You can’t have truth without love.
Our hearts should break for the unbeliever, and we should love them not judge them. Then Paul talks about our friends that say they believe, but nothing about their life shows that they believe because they are living in sin. Keep in the context that He is speaking of sin that hurts others. We aren't an example of light when we sin against our bodies and others.
Who is your standard? I hope that it is Christ and you would share and stand for the truth instead of letting your friends drowned in the darkness of sin. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but we should watch who we associate ourselves with this school year. We can help those that are struggling because we would want someone to do the same when we are struggling, but claiming to live for Christ and having no form of Godliness is a dangerous thing. When we play with fire, we usually get burnt. Who you with? Who you run with determines the direction you run. This school year ask God to show you who it is He wants you to hang out with.
Lord, Jesus, show me this school year who it is that you want me to be hanging out with by continually placing them in front of me and placing me where you want me to be. God, I surrender to your will for my life this school year. Amen.
