When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. John 2:3-7 (NIV)
This is a famous passage in scripture because this miracle is where Jesus turns water into wine indicates the start of His ministry and His walk towards the cross. Many commentaries don’t believe Mary knew what she was asking. Though it is not explicitly stated what Mary thought Jesus would do we can debate that another time. Jesus was obedient and asked servants to fill the pots physically, but He turned the water into wine supernaturally. I think we all believe in Jesus, the person, but what about the power of Jesus?
I genuinely believe in the actual power of Jesus Christ being something that didn’t just exist in biblical times, but something that is still alive and still at work. I believe more in what God says then what my friends say. I pray with people all the time that believe more in what the doctor has told them versus what the scriptures say. It breaks my heart that often we think more in the words of a man than the Word of God. Don’t allow the words of people to be what defines you. Jesus was not only obeying His mother's quest, but He was fulfilling prophecy. He wasn’t trying to make the people of the party happy, but instead exposing His Lordship and accepting persecution. Don't change who you are in Christ because of the pain that others cause you. Which eventually led to His death on a cross. Two questions to think about today.
How much of the Word of God lives in you?
Do you believe in the actual miracle power of God?
Lord I don’t need to see a miracle to believe in who you are. God today would you make yourself very real to me and allow me to feel your love. Today God help me to live by your Word. Amen.
