His Presence

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. Psalm 139:7-8 (NIV)

Jason Upton says in one of his songs, these words, “from the mountain to the valley, from the desert to the raging sea, from the silence to the city streets, your presence always covers me.” There is no mountain you can go to that God isn’t. There is no depth that you can go to that God isn’t. He is well of Life in the abandoned desert and the boat of protection in the raging sea. There is no isolated place that He isn’t present. He is the voice in the silence and the silence in the city streets.

One time when I was about 17 years old I thought that during my time of hardship that had me caught between losing a football game and finding a girlfriend. God would hear me if I went to a mountain. My focus was more on the mountain and not on the presence of God. Needless to say, I didn’t hear God like I thought I would. Recognizing that God is all around us is more important than getting to a place to find Him. God finds us where we are. Are you aware of His presence no matter where you are? We can’t reduce the presence of God to just experiencing Him in the valley or on the mountain by doing so we are content with too little of God when God is everywhere.

Lord tap we on the shoulder today, turn my ear to hear your voice, and may my heart be surrendered to your presence no matter where I am. Amen.
