Be Thankful So You Don't Forget God

"And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes... when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery..." Deuteronomy 8:11-14 (ESV) When life is good, and we are feeling full because of some great accomplishment or situation in life, we all have lived long enough to know; it is only temporary. The gift under the tree we thought would make us happy and complete is forgotten just months or even weeks after Christmas. The championship trophy on our shelf, the part we got in the play, or the boyfriend who's heart we won, all leave us wanting something else as time goes by. It’s at times like these that we are most vulnerable to forgetting God. If we experience success frequently enough, instead of thanking God, we begin to think it was our own abilities that brought about the success. This couldn't be further from the truth. The way to keep from forgetting about God is to be THANKFUL. To remember that every good and perfect thing comes from our God and is to be enjoyed for our good. That it's God who has given us our abilities and He is the one who orchestrates the situations where we experience abundance. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." The joy we experience in these circumstances will be temporary and fleeting if we don't connect our pleasures to the one who created us and loves us. So next time, you are feeling high on life, remember who it was that lifted you and sustained you. Prayer Lord Jesus, forgive me when I have forgotten you in my successes. Help me to acknowledge you in all circumstances by giving you thanks in all things, especially my wins. Amen
