Who Should You Pray For?
"You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you ill be acing as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.” Matthew 5:43-45 (NLT)
My goal in life is to look more like a child of God every day and to show others what Jesus looks like every day. And when I see in the Bible and more specifically in Jesus’s own words, “…in that way you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven” I immediately key in on what the action is that will make me look more like a child of the True King.
What does it mean to love? If you asked ten people this question you would most likely get ten different answers. It seems to me that from the verses for today, to love is to pray for and to be warm towards and to refresh. Jesus is telling us to live and act differently from what the world expects when we face opposition. Have you ever met someone who is just nice to be around? You always feel welcomed by them and they provide a sense of “warmth”, and to be honest you just feel refreshed by spending time with them? If you’re like me, the first thing that fits that description so perfectly is my bed! It keeps me warm and it refreshes me! Kidding, kidding. But do you have that person in mind? It would appear that Jesus is telling us that for us to “act like true children of God” we are to be that person to everyone. There is no distinction of like or dislike. We have all heard it said and I know it to be true by application, but it is very hard to dislike or even hate someone when you are on your knees for them (Ephesians 3:14) in prayer; fighting on their behalf in this spiritual war that is raging, trying to take them out.
So I ask you today, who are your those that you could be praying for. Who does Jesus want to express his love for through you today?
Jesus, remind me today of my true identity. I am a son/daughter of the One True King. I am Your kid before anything else. Help me today to be prayerful for those that I don’t feel like liking, to be a warm presence to those who are cold towards me, and a refreshing soul for those who need to know You. Thank you for Your love for me and for those.
