Developing Our Own Identities

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT) Many teenagers believe the lie that they have to develop their own identities. Social media has made it easy to make a real attempt at fitting in and developing identities. Through the avatars (an icon or figure representing a particular person in video games, Internet forums, etc.) we can create on our social media platforms, we can escape from our true selves. We can fake who we really are and hide behind the digital wall. By selectively creating what people see on social media platforms, in an attempt to fit in, we keep ourselves from becoming who God made us to be. God is the one who created us and formed us out of His love and for His purposes. We don't have to develop our own identities, because we already have one. God calls us His children, and who we are flows from this truth. Romans 8:14-16 says, "you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, 'Abba father!' The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God." When we identify ourselves as God's children, we will live like His children. Through the power of His Spirit by which we cry out our Daddy's name, we can live a life full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control. We can live a life that imitates the life of Jesus and brings glory to His name. This life will not only be lived outside of the tech world of social media but will pour over to our Instagram and Snapchat feeds. It will not be who we portray ourselves to be; it will simply be who we are. Prayer Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me Your Holy Spirit by which I can call on my Heavenly Father as Daddy. Help me to live a genuine and transparent life that is loving to others and honors you in my hallways and on my social media feeds. Amen
