Can You Be Content?
"Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:11-13 (NLT) What does it mean to be content? Better yet, how can we live our lives in such a way that reflects that contentment? The dictionary definition of the word content is a state of happiness, satisfaction, or peace. These are things that the world around us desperately lacks. People are always longing for the latest and greatest in technology, never satisfied with what they currently have. It is rare in today’s society to see our leaders set aside their differences and simply be at peace with each other. A crippling part of our fallen sin-nature is our lack of contentment. But we are called to live differently from this world. We are called to contentment and the peace, happiness, and satisfaction that comes along with it. This is often easier said than done. The apostle Paul is a shining example of contentment for us. He had it all, he was a Pharisee, which was a very prominent religious position of the day. Paul was also a Roman citizen. He had advanced in his religious ranks remarkable quickly for a man of his young age, and his zeal for the Jewish religion was unmatched. He had it all going for him, but when he accepted the call from The Lord, he had to sacrifice it all. He would be imprisoned, beaten, stoned, and eventually banished to a prison island to spend the remainder of his days. Yet it says in Philippians that he was totally content. He had learned to be content in whatever situation he was going through. How did he do this? He found his comfort and peace in The Lord. He trusted that He would provide for him whatever he needed. He found everything he needed in The Lord. That is what we too should do. Allow the desires of our hearts to be the will of The Lord and the things which He has for us. Prayer Dear Lord, thank You that you are enough for me. Thank You that no matter what I am going through, You will provide everything that I need. Help me to find my contentment in You.
