Then Jesus said, "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat. Mark 6:31 (NLT)
I picture this verse like a war movie that I had watched before. I don't remember the film, but I remember the scene, or maybe I just imagined it. The platoon just came out of an intense battle, and when they finally get away and into a safe zone with each other, and the adrenaline and chaos settle, the soldiers begin to notice their wounds. Some of the wounds they discover are life-threatening, and some are just minor, but all their injuries needed to be treated.
I see that scene like our lives. It’s fast and chaotic, and our adrenaline is going all the time. There are expectations and demands, all the while we are getting shot at and wounded. Some wounds are self-inflicted, and some are from the enemy, but all our injuries need to be treated. Some wounds we receive may be severe and some minor. We all need to set aside time with Jesus intentionally. We need to break free with Jesus from the chaotic battle of life and to look at our souls and take inventory. We need to allow Jesus to mend our brokenness and heal our soul sicknesses.
We can do this by breaking away in the morning or in the evening with a Bible, a journal, and even some worship music and just rest with Jesus. It is a time with Jesus to be vulnerable and honest with our emotions and thoughts. To confess known sins and to ask for strength and grace to overcome them. Jesus invites us all, saying, "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile."
Lord Jesus, Help me to create space and time to be with you so I can receive Your rest. Amen
