"Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes." 1 John 2:9-11 (ESV)
Have you ever had a problem with someone who also believed in the Lord or held a grudge against a brother or sister in Christ. I won’t lie about it myself; I have had many disagreements and problems with brothers or sisters in Christ. We have been called to love like God and to know that no situation or circumstance could ever take away His love for us. Jesus has left us an example to love no matter the pain other people may cause us. We must recognize that when we hold hate in our hearts for one another it only causes more pain and harm. We are called to live as brothers and sisters not as enemies. God calls us to love him and love one another.
We are encouraged to always love our brothers and sisters in Christ and if we do have a problem with them then we should always seek to be reconciliation (Matthew 5:23-24). Jesus loved the Pharisees even thought they hated him and wanted to have him killed. If Jesus loved people who wanted to kill Him, how much more should we seek to resolve grudges with our own brothers and sisters in Christ. When we truly love one another as God calls us to love, then there will be nothing in our relationships that causes us to stumble.
Lord Jesus, fill my heart with a greater love for my fellow brothers and sisters who follow You. Help me to not be easily offended, which is a trademark of love, Your love. Amen
