“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:25-26; 33 (NIV)
As a high school student, there is a lot of pressure to figure out your life pathway. It seems like counselors, parents, and other peers are asking us often, probing, "Do you know what career you want to pursue?" This is a lot of pressure for a teenager all the while trying to navigate the challenges of friends, feelings, and family.
The fact is, even as teenagers, we should be thinking about our future and which direction we should go in, as it concerns a career and life. The problem happens when we leave God, the one who created us for a specific career and calling, out of the equation. So how should we go about it?
I believe Jesus provides the clarity needed. Don't pursue a career and way of life as a first priority. Instead, we should pursue Jesus, and He will reveal to us our career and calling. He will reveal to us who He created us to be and the steps we need to take. If we let fear and the pressure of missing our purpose drive us in our pursuit, we will actually increase our chances of missing it.
Fear causes us to panic and act using our own wisdom and ways. This never leads to anything good. But when we let Jesus be the passion and pursuit of our lives, He promises that "All these things will be given to you as well." All these things definitely include our careers and calling.
So don't worry and seek after your purpose - Jesus is your purpose. Seek after Him and His calling and He will show you what you should do and when you should do it.
Pursue The WHO and not the WHAT!
Jesus, forgive me when I get overwhelmed with what I have to do and overlook You. Help me to seek after You first, trusting that you have a perfect plan for my life and that You will make sure it is fulfilled. Amen
