Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)
Let's just say it, the list above rolls off the tongue easily, but easy can't be said about any of the descriptions mentioned about today's verse. A better word would be "hard." Patience does not come easily to us. Celebrating those who have what we want does not come easy. Seeking the desires and best for others above ourselves is not easy.
The truth is, doing the opposite of love comes easily. Impatience is easy. Keeping a grudge is easy. Being cynical instead of hopeful is easy. Quitting is easy.
Our fallen flesh is incapable of the love Paul is describing, but the Holy Spirit is living inside of us, and He gives us the ability to love as Jesus loved. Every day, if we acknowledge the presence of God in us and give Him permission to live through us, our actions will line-up with love.
Today will you give Jesus permission to live His life of love through you?
Lord Jesus, you have called me to love, but it is so hard at times. Help me to remember the Holy Spirit that is love, lives inside of me. I give you permission to love others through me today. Amen
