"Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.' Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God - I say this to your shame." 1 Corinthians 15:33-34 (NIV)
Don't be fooled! Hanging out with people who don't care about themselves (bad company) will never work positively for you. Individuals who don't care about themselves live for the moment with no regard concerning the outcomes of their choices. The previous verse, talking about people who have no regard for the eternal, states the following as their motto, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die." Notice there is no concern for others - "us" and "we." All they can think about is themselves and the fleeting pleasures they are living for. The truth is people who don't care about THEMselves will not care about YOURself. They are bad company, and if you hang out with them enough, you will experience the fallout from their bad choices.
So stop joining with them in their sin and become the witness Jesus has called you to be. You may have to distance yourself from them and reduce your "hangout" time, but it will give you the margin you need to reconnect with Christ and grow. When you live how they live - for the temporary - your relationship with Jesus suffers, and your example for Him is diminished. Your light becomes dim, and your salt becomes less salty. Jesus has called you to be light to them and to not participate in darkness with them.
Jesus has invited you to be a Godly influence in the lives of those around you. If bad company corrupts good character, maybe a Godly life observed can help change a corrupt heart (a heart that is sick without Jesus).
Jesus, give me the strength and courage to live for you alone. Help me to know that when I live for you, I become the witness that my friends truly need. I know when I live for you, I become a true friend to all. Amen
