“There are diversities of gifts… But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” - 1 Corinthians 12:4,11 (NIV)
So many times, we ask “What is so special about me?” We feel like there is nothing unique or interesting about ourselves, and we feel insignificant. And if you are a Jesus follower, you certainly have thought, “I don’t know how God can use me in a big way.”
Paul, who was literally a “Christian killer” must have struggled with this as well. But this same Paul, who wrote our verse for today, experienced Christ in a way that changed his life forever. Jesus took this persecutor of His people and turned him into a man who would nurture, teach, and encourage them instead. This same Paul, is letting Christians at Corinth know that God has uniquely gifted each one of them through His Holy Spirit. This Spirit, whom they received, when they repented of their sins and trusted Christ’s work on the cross for forgiveness.
Notice, it says, “each one” received talents, passions, and abilities that are in perfect harmony with how God created them. It didn’t say only “some” or just the important ones (whatever that means).
No matter how we feel, the truth is that each one of us is unique and there is no one who can “fill your shoes.” In another scripture, Paul calls the church the “body.” And just like when a body part is missing or injured, the whole body is less effective and struggles. In the same way, when we don’t step into our God given calling and operate in our God given abilities, the whole body (church, youth group, ministry) will suffer.
When we are all walking in our God given lanes for life, the church is whole and healthy, and people see Jesus as He really is. If you are struggling with how God has wired you, pray and ask the LORD to show you. Also, you can see your pastor or youth leader, and they will be able to help you discover God’s giftings for your life. You are God’s unique and special creation! You are GIFTED.
