Why We Can Rejoice

May 13, 2019

“Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith." Philippians 3:1

As a teacher for years, I used the phrase, "Repetition is learning." Anything we would like to do well needs to be repeated, as long as what is repeated is correct. That is also true for wrong behaviors. We usually call these bad habits; they too are born out of repetition.

Here we are with the Apostle Paul, who was a passionate teacher and who knew what mattered most for following Christ. He says, like any good teacher, I never get tired of repeating myself (teaching). He does this for their good and not his own. He calls it a safeguard, something that will keep them from falling and failing.

All through scripture, God does the same thing, repeating Himself in the things that matter most, Do not fear, Love others first, Remember, and Worship God only. He is letting us know, by His repetition, these things matter most.

Paul must have said it many times, but he feels the need to remind the Philippians one more time. He encourages them again, no matter what your situation, or how challenging the persecution you are experiencing… “Rejoice in the Lord.”

What Paul has told the Philippians is true for us. No matter what you are experiencing in the temporary, as Jesus follower, you can rejoice. We can rejoice because the temporary is temporary. The hardship, loss, and pain will not last forever, but will one day give way to an eternity with no more pain, or tears. An eternity where we will be all that we were created to be. A physical home with Jesus forever. And so, because our circumstances will not last forever, but eternity with Jesus will, we can REJOICE!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me your perspective when I face hard and painful situations. Holy Spirit, please remind me that this fallen world will not last forever and that only goodness and joy awaits me in the future! Thank you that I can have a heart that rejoices in You no matter what I face. In Jesus Name. Amen!
