My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27 (NLT)
One of the most asked questions by students is "How can I know God's voice?"
My steady answer has been, "His voice sounds like His WORD (Bible) and looks like Jesus (life)."
Most of the time, when students ask this question, they are looking for direction from God concerning areas of work, dating, college, and the like. While God clearly has a plan for where you should work and go to college, He is more concerned that you are seeking a deepening relationship with Him and looking to live in love toward the people in your home and the people you encounter on a daily basis. This is exactly what Jesus meant when He said, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Jesus expects His disciples to know His voice and to follow Him in response. The more time you spend with Jesus, through reading the Bible, praying, and spending time with other believers, the better you will grow in recognizing Jesus' direction and leadership in your life. You were created to know His voice, but like any relationship, it takes time with.
It takes time with Jesus to get to know Jesus. I have been with my wife for 20 years and with Jesus for 26 years. I have spent a lot of time with both of them, and because of this, I recognize their voices. Like any relationship, my relationships with both Jesus and my wife are always growing. I am still learning new aspects of both of them and myself.
I would love to tell you there is a shortcut to recognizing Jesus' voice, but good relationships don't use shortcuts. People in good relationships enjoy the process of getting to know each other and solely spending time with one another. This should be true of our relationship with Jesus. Our motivation for spending time with Jesus shouldn't be to know His voice, but instead, to spend time with Him. He loves when we spend time with Him and so should we. As we spend time with Jesus, we will naturally grow in our love for Him and will naturally become better at recognizing His voice.
Lord Jesus, I want to know your voice in a more significant way. Help me desire to spend more time with you and to grow in my relationship with You naturally. Thank you that you created me to hear and know Your voice.
